Decubitus is a bedsore that develops with persisting pressure. Due to pressure on the smallest blood vessels (capillaries), the gas exchange and nutrient supply in the affected tissue is no longer given. An oedema develops, the inadequately supplied skin is damaged, first superficially, then deeper, the vessels die off and the tissue turns necrotic.

Suitable positioning measures and promotion of movement relieve the pressure on the areas at risk. Only use as many as necessary and not as many as possible positioning aides. Preventing the patient's immobility takes top priority and is the best prophylaxis.
